now, about 10 blocks. but the search for the killers here continue to expand. and the fbi says someone, someone knows who did this. they ask people to think. somebody talk about targeting the boston marathon? did they hear explosions in a rural area? did they see anyone carrying a heavy black or dark colored backpack? >> we can asking anyone who may have heard someone speak about the marathon or the date of april 15, in any way, indicate he or she targeted the event to call us. someone knows who did this. >> we are leaving flowers. they are remembering all the people. >> reporter: two eight-year- olds were trying to comprehend the violence. hoping to explain the unexplainable. >> i told them that some very bad people did some very bad

things here. >> kind of scared, but kind of like we can get them. >> scene early quiet, watched over by heavily armed officers. runners came, remembering friends and the people who had been there at the finish line. >> we need strength. i feel like i want to run to those people. unfortunately. >> outside the home of martin richards, a smiling 8-year-old who loved to run and climb, a single balloon inked with the words, the door of heaven is open. his mom and his sister were also badly hurt in the blast. there's been a lot of talk about who, what group might have done this. and the mayor and the governor say we cannot turn against each other. we must turn to each other. boston is one community. in boston, bruce leshan, wusa9.

>> president obama says the american people refuse to be terrorized by attacks like this and he used some of what he saw yesterday as the reasons why. >> exhausted runners who kept running to the nearest hospital to give blood and those who stayed to tend to the wounded. some tearing off their own clothes to make tourniquets. the men and women who are still treating the wounded at some of the best hospitals in the world. >> for many around the country, the bombings came on the day of the boston marathon. there is much more to that day. the marathon is held every year on a state holiday. patriots day. it commemorates the battles of lexington and concorde during the revolutionary war. it falls on the third monday of every april. in addition to the marathon, the white sox play a home game starting at 11:00 a.m. and people typically have the day off from work and school to

celebrate the day. >> today is also holiday in the district and security ramped up for an emancipation day event. our bruce johnson is live at freedom plaza with more. bruce. >> reporter: anita, local city, but it's the nation's capital. just back over there, a block and a half to the white house, heavy security. two miles east, heavy security. about a block and a half south that way, in the direction of all this traffic headed to the 14th street bridge and northern virginia, all of those famous monuments, heavy security. right in here, near freedom plaza, you don't see a lot of security, but you can't miss the cameras and that police are watching us and they have live bodies in front of those cameras. today was emancipation day. it's a big day in the city. it's a holiday. big parade, lots of food. went off without a hitch. >> it's a city holiday, time

for families, food, and a parade. one day after the boston marathon attack. turned out to commemorate emancipation day 1863. that's when president lincoln abolished slavery in d.c. >> this is a very important occasion and i think that given the society that we're in, it does call to our attention that we need to do more about violence. >> can't be. we have already gone through a lot. >> talk of boston, thoughts of the explosion victims and a possible attack here were everywhere today. >> i know security is very good in washington, d.c. and the parade must go on and the celebration cannot stop. >> i know you are busy. what do you think of the turnout? we're on high alert. people are concerned, what is the message? >> message is, i'm glad to see people out here. they recognize this is the city that is resilient. we are ready.

we're back on wusa9 and this house fire spent three people to the hospital and there's not much left of that home. it broke out late this morning in a two-story home near lee highway. witnesses say one person jumped from the house to escape the flames and that is pretty much all that left. we do not know what started the fire. >> a guilty plea today for a local lawyer and entrepreneur

who was called a high-tech peeping tom. >> reporter: dennis pled guilty today to turning smoke detectors into spy cameras, trained on unsuspecting women. dennis allen is a high-tech entrepreneur who claims degrees from harvard, mit, and penn state. he is a landlord, too, for years renting rooms inside his chevy chase home to young professional women, who as these photos shown, he had been secretly video recording in their most private moments with intimate partners. sometimes through windows, sometimes using a spy camera hidden in what looked like a smoke detector. this tee tenant said she noticed them. >> the smoke detectors would beep, and mine didn't do anything. >> not only did she steal these women's privacy, he stole

their peace of mind. >> he'll be released on $5,000 bail and be sentenced in july. most importantly, the judge ordered him not to rent rooms in his house to anyone anymore. in rockville, scott broom, wusa9. >> here's a head's up for anybody with family or friends visiting d.c. this summer. probably a lot of you. the smithsonian plans to close some exhibits starting sometime after may 1. blame it on all those across the board budget cuts. the smithsonian says it lost $41 million under the cutback. >> lowering of flag is a tribute easy to see. how others are paying homage to the victims in boston that may not be the grief was staggering. one hundred days after us senate starts to act are coming together background checks the second amendment hands of dangerous criminals. ninety percent of america background checks. urge them to join comprehensive background checks. demand action. now.

flags on top of the white house were lowered to half staff in honor of the three people killed at boston marathon. president obama ordered the order that flags be lowered in their memories. six years ago, those flags were being lowered for a different reason. one of the deadliest mass shootings in u.s. history. >> survivors of the virginia tech shootings took time to

reflect on what happened in boston. peggy fox spoke with some of them. >> marvel johnson. >> lilly is reading people who died. she survived from virginia tech's massacre. >> we will heal but we'll always live with this. >> she has been filled with survivor's guilt since many of her classmates died. she was shot in the wrist and jaw and a bullet is lodged one millimeter from her brain stem. too dangerous to remove. her recovery, physically and mentally, continues. >> i had to have several surgeries, reconstruction surgeries for my jaw and my face. >> peter reid lost his daughter, mary. he says the families who lost loved ones in boston will need their private space while potentially being thrust into the spotlight. >> the media is looking at you as a pool of people from an

event. you are a family of a person who was killed or injured and that is your frame of reference. you are being asked to do something on a national scale when your tragedy is really on a personal scale. >> steven was shot in the aurora movie theater last july. he said yesterday's bombings brought him back to that horrible day. the group is visiting the offices of senators trying to convince them to expand background checks. the families and victims of gun violence are worried that their issues will be pushed to the back burner. they are not letting that deter them one bit. >> a lot of these families, it's been many years. for virginia tech, it's been six years. >> at the u.s. capitol, peggy fox, wusa9. >> the virginia tech massacre left 33 people dead and 27 others injured. coping with disasters can

weather camera. it's nice outside. clouds gone away. temperature 73. relative humidity, comfortable. 57%. winds light and out of the south right now at 13. they will become easterly again tomorrow as the front can't make up its mind which way it wants to go. here's a look at the radar. we are quiet right now around the metro area. big thunderstorms out in the ohio valley and in fact, severe weather in the ohio valley. we have a severe thunderstorm watch to the west of us. some of this activity will die out and graze our northern suburbs later on tonight. temperature wise, 74 fairfax. 76 in reston. 73 in waldorf and 76 in college park. so, oscillating cold front for the rest of the week. it will take this front through friday to figure out which way to go. a few showers tonight. and easterly winds on wednesday. that will knock temperatures down a shade, but warmer on thursday and friday. that will increase our chance for showers and thunderstorms.

but, 73 tomorrow. 75 on thursday. 77 on friday. yes, we have showers and thunderstorms each day, but neither day will be a washout. we get into saturday, very early morning shower, but nice. no worries about the games. you have little league games. lows in the mid 40s. maybe a few showers next tuesday and with those lows in the 40s over the weekend, that means 30s in the suburbs. that's average. average low is 38 to 46. it's cool, not used to it, get ready. >> the rain will help with the allergies. >> kristen berset is at the verison center tonight. the caps not too far away from the game against toronto, huh? >> reporter: that's right, lesli. a big game tonight. as they say, the game must go on. the caps hit the ice, but the victims in boston weigh on their mind. head coach, adam oats speaks out. plus, alex lynn says good-bye

reciprocated. it makes you take a step back and realize that and how scary it is. >> in college park this afternoon, alex lynn officially announced he is entering the nba draft. he held a press conference alongside mark turgen. the sophomore is expected to be a lottery pick, but he will move up the board after the team sees his individual workouts leading up to the draft. at the press conference, lynn thanked his coaches for helping develop him into a good player, but at the end of the day, both sides knew it was time to move on. >> my family and i have been thinking about it for some time now. and together, we came to the conclusion that i think is going to be the best decision for me and my career. >> and don't forget to vote in this week's toyota game of the week poll. four great choices for you to choose from. boys and girls lacrosse as well
